HVAC SYSTEMS

At Clarke, we deal exclusively with Fujitsu, York and Airease. They are some of the top manufacturers producing highly efficient and very reliable heating and cooling products. Regardless of which manufacturer we decide together is best for you, they all require similar units and systems in order to work seamlessly together to provide you with comfort all year round.

Heat pumps

Simply, a heat pump takes heat from one area and moves it to another. This means that an area of cool air called a “heat sink” will be raised to the temperature that you have set for your comfort.

A heat pump doesn’t just heat. Your heat pump can function as an air conditioner, too.  By reversing the process, your heat pump unit will remove heat from the air in your home and send it outdoors.

Overall, heat pumps provide a very efficient and cost effective heating and cooling solution here in Victoria, BC. The two types of heat pumps are ducted vs. ductless.

Ducted Heat Pumps

Central heat pumps move heat or cooled air from the outdoor air into your home. The heat pumps are paired with either an electrical air handler unit or a gas furnace, which distributes heated or cooled air throughout your home. After the heat is taken from its source, it is distributed throughout your home through a system of ducts. This is the preferred option for new construction as they are ideal for larger spaces and multi-heating and cooling zones.

Ductless heat pumps

Ductless heat pumps, also known as mini-split systems, work by blowing the heated or cooled air directly into a room. They don’t have a need for an air handler unit or a gas furnace. These systems are very popular for home owners that want to convert an existing home from baseboard electric heating. They are also ideal for heating and cooling smaller spaces.

Gas Furnaces and Electrical Air Handlers

Gas Furnaces: If you have a gas connection to your home, these highly efficient units are a great complement to your heat pump system. They not only use a blower to distribute heat or cooled air produced by the heat pump throughout your home or business, they act as a backup heating source if the temperature falls below zero. These gas units are highly efficient with a very low operating cost.

Electric Air Handlers: If gas is not an option, electrical air handlers provide a great alternative. Even though they are not as efficient as a gas unit they still have a low operating cost for Victoria and Vancouver Island as our temperatures rarely go below zero.

HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator) and Air Purification Systems

HRV: Heat Recovery Ventilators are required by most bylaws today for new home or business construction. Their purpose is to provide a continuous supply of fresh air from outside to the inside. This helps get rid of stale air without unpleasant drafts, which increases indoor comfort.

Air Purification: Air purification systems are great for controlling allergens, smells and keeping bacteria and viruses at bay. These systems use a combination of advanced filters and ultraviolet lights to enhance the quality of the air you breathe.

HRV and air purifiers, when integrated with your heat pump system, enhance your home or business’ ability to fight against:

Thermostats

Thermostats are what allow you to interact directly with your heating system that makes your heat pump, furnace and air purifier all work together as a team. Today’s thermostats have become interactive with digital graphics. They display the outdoor conditions and the temperature inside, while providing easy to use functions for controlling the temperature. Thermostats have become smart and are able to communicate with home or business automation systems, allowing you to also control them from the convenience of your phone or tablet.
